How to Be Great at the Stuff You Hate: About the Book
How to be Great at the Stuff You Hate is essential reading for anybody in a role that requires them to sell their services. Particularly, if they don’t have a specific ‘salesperson’ to perform negotiations. Furthermore, if you are starting your own business or even starting to search for a new role or an investor, you would not be wasting your time reading this book either.
Taking Action
What I loved about this book was its simplicity and ease of reading. Secondly, the message to act was very clear. The author, Nick Davies, guides you by dispensing very practical tips on how to act throughout.
I took action very early on in the book. It helped me go from thinking, ‘Who the heck is going to want to talk to me about my service?’ To having built a contact list, made connections and booked several phone calls for the following week. Follow Nick’s advice and it works.
How to be Great at the Stuff You Hate is very easy to follow too. Nick Davies has a straightforward and practical way of explaining ‘the what’ and ‘the why’.
A Key Learning
One of my key learning’s from Nick’s experience was how important it is that I get serious and disciplined (two words that you would not naturally associate with me) about the process of business development. I’ve read books of similar content many times before. However, from the outset of his advice, Nick got me to stop thinking about the sale and start thinking about the connection.
I love meeting and connecting with people – I am in the people profession after all. However, as soon as a sale becomes attached to the conversation I freeze and become someone I don’t recognise!
My reflections as a result of reading How to be Great at the Stuff You Hate have helped me to understand this better. Moreover, they have helped me to come up with a plan to get me through it.
