Employer’s Liability Insurance
It is mandatory in the United Kingdom for companies to have insurance. This is part of the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969. It is also referred to as Employment Practices Liability Insurance (ELPI).
Any business that employs at least one person needs to have insurance from an authorised insurer. This is to protect both parties in accidents, illnesses, injuries, or death that is work-related.
This type of insurance protects employees and their employers. For instance, if an employee gets an injury or becomes sick while working for their employer, the insurance covers the costs. This also includes employees both full-time and part-time. Also contractors, apprentices, and temporary staff. In addition, it also protects businesses from claims by ex-employees and current employees. This covers any injury or illness that happens in relation to work. In addition to that, it covers compensation and the costs of defending the business.
Companies without insurance must cover these expenses.
In addition, businesses without them can face fines of up to £2500 per day. This applies for every day they don’t have insurance.
The law requires a minimum of £5 million for Employer’s Liability Insurance, however, many insurers offer up to £10 million.
It is a requirement to display the EL certificate and have it available for inspectors.
Non-compliance risks a fine of £1,000.
